At Time & Talents, we often talk about community as something that’s built through everyday actions, people showing up for one another, sharing skills, and making use of what’s already around us. Sometimes, those actions come together in a way that tells a bigger story.
Earlier this year, that story began with a simple donation.
From seedlings to shared meals
Thanks to the generosity of Burgess Park Community Nurseries, we received a collection of young seedlings at the start of the growing season. These were planted and cared for in our community garden at our Rotherhithe site, tended by members, volunteers and staff who regularly spend time growing food together.
Over the weeks that followed, those seedlings grew into fresh vegetables, grown locally, picked by hand, and shared among people who know the garden well.
Rather than stopping there, the produce became part of our ongoing food project with Appleby Blue, where we cook meals alongside residents. The vegetables grown in our garden were used in shared cooking sessions, bringing people together around food that had travelled just a short distance from soil to kitchen.
More than food
The project with Appleby Blue is about much more than what’s on the plate. Cooking together creates space for conversation, shared memories, and learning new skills. It’s an opportunity to talk about food, culture and routine, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of making something together.
Using produce grown in our own community adds another layer. It helps people see where food comes from, reduces waste, and makes the process feel tangible and personal. For many participants, it’s meaningful to know that the vegetables they’re cooking with were grown just a few streets away.
A local cycle of support
What makes this work special is the way local organisations support one another. Burgess Park Community Nurseries nurture plants and growing skills. Time & Talents provides space, relationships and opportunities to grow and share food. Appleby Blue brings people together around the table.
Each part of the process relies on the others, a small, local cycle that turns seedlings into meals, and meals into moments of connection.
Rooted in our values
This work reflects Time & Talents’ values: using what we have, working alongside our neighbours, and building community through shared activity. It shows how collaboration can create practical outcomes while also strengthening relationships and well-being.
We’re proud to work with partners who share this approach, and grateful to everyone involved, from the growers to the cooks to the people who sit down and eat together.
