Time & Talents Annual Community Survey 2025: What you told us

Every year, we ask the people who take part in our groups, activities and support services what difference Time & Talents makes in their lives. Listening closely to our community has been part of who we are since 1887, and the findings shape everything we do.

This year’s survey heard from older adults, families, volunteers, community groups, and people who take part in activities across both our centres. The feedback was thoughtful, honest, and incredibly encouraging. It shows not just the value of individual sessions, but the deeper impact of belonging, routine, friendship, and shared experience.

Below are some of the key things you told us.

A strong sense of belonging

Across the board, people spoke about the feeling of community at T&T, something we work hard to nurture.

  • 96% of respondents said taking part with T&T helps them feel part of a community
  • 98% of community group members agreed they feel part of a community when they spend time here.
  • One volunteer put it simply:
“I feel that I’ve been able to give something back. Listening and engaging has helped me grow, too.”

For many, the sense of welcome starts the moment they step through the door or onto the minibus.
“I always enjoy the journey on the minibus with Kay and Dave,” one older adult shared.

Support, inclusion and meeting new people

A central part of our mission is making sure no one feels isolated or left out. Your feedback shows how important this is:

  • 90% of older adults said they feel supported and know who to talk to if they need help.
  • 94% of older participants said they meet people they wouldn’t normally meet, including those of different ages and backgrounds.
  • 93% of all respondents said they feel supported and included at T&T.

One participant captured this beautifully:
“Things have been really tough, but I’m so glad to get out to Time & Talents. It’s the one part of my week where I can stop worrying.”

Happiness, well-being and feeling better in daily life

Our work isn’t just about activities, it’s about helping people feel well, connected and able to enjoy life.

  • 91% said T&T improves their wellbeing, whether through feeling fitter, happier or more purposeful.
  • 97% of community group members agreed that taking part improves their wellbeing.
  • 82% said T&T gives them opportunities to experience happiness.

One parent told us:
“I feel like a different person than when we started eight weeks ago, and the baby is too. Having something regular to come out to has helped me organise my weeks.”

And from a child in our Holiday Club:
“I had the best day ever because I liked having lunch with everyone.”

Building friendships and feeling connected locally

Making friendships and strengthening local ties are at the core of our settlement ethos.

  • A remarkable 99% of community group participants said they have made friends and built relationships through T&T.
  • 99% also said they feel more positive about the local area thanks to their time here.
  • 79% feel able to get more involved in their local community, showing that the confidence built here spreads outward.

A member of one of our groups said simply:
“We love T&T. Our tai chi teacher is brilliant.”

Older Adults: rebuilding social networks and reducing isolation

We currently support over 500 older adults each year. Their feedback shows the difference this makes to their lives:

  • 94% of older adults reported meeting new people they wouldn’t normally meet.
  • 90% feel supported and know where to turn for help.

Comments from families tell their own story:
“Our thanks to you all for the kindness you have shown Mum. Time & Talents is her favourite time of the week.”

Volunteers & Befrienders: giving and receiving support

Volunteers play a vital role in keeping our community strong.

  • 94% of volunteers feel part of a community through their involvement.
  • 88% say volunteering at T&T improves their wellbeing.

Befriending continues to offer a deep connection for older adults who cannot easily leave their homes:

“My volunteer boosts me up. He’s so nice, he complements me and my home.”
“Befriending has helped me develop my communication skills and understand how to support older people better.”

Cycling befrienders told us how much they value the freedom, fresh air and fun brought to them through our trishaw rides.

Children, families and a sense of play

Parents and children shared warm words about the impact of youth activities, after-school clubs and holiday programmes:

  • “Thank you, my son had such a great time at Holiday Club. He won’t stop talking about it!”
  • “The kids’ groups are great and it’s a beautiful area to play.”

These programmes don’t just offer activities; they help families connect, build routine and enjoy shared moments.

What this means for our future work

The survey shows a clear message: when people come together, supported by a strong sense of place and purpose, their lives improve in meaningful ways. Belonging, wellbeing, friendship, confidence and joy all grow when communities have space and support to flourish.

The feedback will help us:

  • strengthen our social groups for older adults
  • continue tackling loneliness across the area
  • expand opportunities for volunteering and befriending
  • invest in programmes for children and families
  • build more partnerships that reflect local needs

Above all, it reaffirms our core belief that community doesn’t just happen. It takes care, consistency, and a welcoming space where everyone feels they matter.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this survey, and to everyone who makes Time & Talents the warm, lively and supportive place it is.
