We know how powerful it can be to come together, to share skills, stories, and a sense of purpose, especially as we get older. That’s why we’re proud to partner with London Bubble Theatre Company to run The Rotherhithe Shed, a welcoming workshop space for older adults to tinker, mend, make, and meet.
But right now, we need your help to keep it open for longer, through our Crowdfunder campaign.

What is The Rotherhithe Shed?
The Shed is a communal DIY space for people aged 55+, inspired by the Australian Men’s Shed movement, but welcoming to everyone. It’s a place to fix a wobbly chair, learn to use a power saw, paint a portrait, or simply make the tea and enjoy good company.
Held at London Bubble’s workshop on Elephant Lane, it’s free to attend and open every Thursday afternoon. Skilled artists and technical experts are on hand to support participants, and project ideas are encouraged and developed together.
For many, it’s not just about the DIY, it’s about having somewhere to go, something to do, and creating a community.
Why It Matters
“I was looking for something to do for a long time with this kind of stimulation. (I needed) something to stimulate my brain because I can’t work now, being in remission. This way I can use up my energy, it’s the right place to be.” – Shed participant
Loneliness, isolation, and lack of purpose can affect us all, but especially as we age. The Shed offers a space to stay active, learn new skills, and build friendships. It’s a place where people feel seen, valued, and inspired.
Alan, who joined in 2019, discovered a talent for portrait painting. His work has since been exhibited publicly and published in a book, something he never imagined possible in his late seventies.
“I’ve enjoyed people’s company, while my wife works full time still and I don’t anymore. It was a way of getting to know people while they were there and to discover the really impressive skills they bring with themselves!”
Brenda, another regular, found joy in working on her own projects and sharing them with loved ones:
“I like to do my own things, so I have something to show for it – I’m not picking my spots, I’m actually doing something and show people what I’ve done.
”“The different faces, conversations, meeting new people… it’s a lovely bunch of different people, good company, there are so many pluses, and I am not on the road to destruction anymore!”
The Challenge
Until recently, The Shed ran twice a week. But due to funding restrictions, it’s now down to just one session, and we don’t want to lose this vital community space.
“It gives you a project to work on, it gives you a purpose and a bit of an incentive to come in and carry on. You get a sense of ownership and urgency.”
That’s why The Bubble Theatre and Time & Talents have launched a fundraiser with London Bubble Theatre to raise £6,000, enough to reopen The Shed for an additional day each week.

- Materials, tools, tea, coffee and snacks
- Rent and running costs to keep the space open
