Time & Talents is looking for new Trustees

As a trustee of Time & Talents, you will play a key role in shaping the future of a vibrant, community-driven charity with a long history of bringing people together and tackling social isolation.
Time & Talents is a community hub with a difference. Founded in 1887, we have been at the heart of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey for over 137 years, working to ensure that everyone—regardless of age, background, or circumstances—has the support and opportunities they need to thrive. Through our welcoming spaces, innovative programmes, and dedicated team, we help people connect, build friendships, and strengthen their well-being.
As we continue to expand our reach and impact, we are seeking new trustees to join our Board. We welcome individuals with a broad range of skills and experience who share our vision of a connected, compassionate community where no one is left behind.
Appointment Description
We are looking to appoint several new trustees to join our Board and help steer Time & Talents through the next phase of its journey. Trustees play a crucial role in ensuring the organisation is well-governed, financially sustainable, and delivering on its mission.
As a trustee, you will provide strategic oversight, contribute your expertise, and support the leadership team in making key decisions. You will help shape our long-term plans, ensuring that Time & Talents continues to serve the local community effectively and remains a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds.
We will particularly welcome applications from
- potential treasurers to shadow our current treasurer in the last year of her term of office
- people with experience of change management
Organisation Description
- Time & Talents is a registered charity and a well-established local anchor organisation based in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey.
- Our mission is to bring people together to create a world where everyone feels part of a community. We combat loneliness and isolation by running inclusive programmes for older and vulnerable adults, as well as creative, play-based activities for children, young people, and families.
- We operate from two community hubs—the historic Time & Talents Centre and the lively T&T2 space in the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre—providing welcoming, accessible spaces where people can connect, learn, and support one another.
- Our work is built on strong partnerships with local organisations, businesses, and volunteers, ensuring that we remain deeply rooted in the needs of our community while embracing new opportunities for growth and collaboration.
- As we look to the future, we are focused on strengthening our financial resilience, expanding our community engagement, and developing innovative new services to meet emerging needs. Our trustees play a vital role in guiding this vision and ensuring that Time & Talents continues to make a lasting difference in people’s lives.
Trustee Role Description
- Ensuring that Time & Talents pursues its stated objectives (purposes) defined in its governing document. Trustees will help develop and agree a long-term strategy to achieve this.
- Ensuring effective governance by upholding Time & Talents’ legal and regulatory responsibilities, ensuring compliance with the Charity Commission’s requirements, and maintaining high standards of accountability, transparency, and financial oversight.
- Ensuring that Time & Talents complies with its governing document.
- Ensuring Time & Talents complies with charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- Ensuring that Time & Talents only uses its resources for its charitable objectives.
- Ensuring that Time & Talents defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
- Safeguarding the good name and values of Time & Talents.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of Time & Talents. This includes ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place and reviewed appropriately.
- Ensuring the financial sustainability of Time & Talents. All Trustees have shared accountability for the financial health of the charity and ensuring that it is managed in accordance with best practices .
- In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, the duties of the treasurer include taking the lead on the following matters
- Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the charity’s funds are used properly.
- Following proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the chief executive
As well as the statutory duties above, each trustee should use their specific skills, knowledge and experience to help the board reach sound decisions.
This may involve:
- Participating in and contributing to sub-committees
- Reviewing and critically engaging with board papers to ensure informed decision-making
- Facilitating discussions to contribute to productive and balanced decision-making
- Focusing on key issues with insight and strategic awareness
- Providing advice and guidance on new initiatives
- Advising on any issues where the trustee has special expertise.
Person specification
- Have connections to Southwark through home or work
- A commitment to Time & Talents.
- A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
- Ability to attend a minimum of four board meetings per year and one away day per year
- Strategic vision.
- Good, independent judgement.
- An ability to think creatively.
- A willingness to speak their mind.
- An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
- An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
